In my practice, I’ve encountered many clients grappling with feelings of hopelessness, burdened by heavy and draining emotions. I’ve listened to their stories, filled with despair, echoing sentiments such as, “What is there to be hopeful for in this world?” or “I’ve never felt wanted or loved; it’s just the way things are,” or “I’ve hit rock bottom – no job, no savings, everything falling apart – where is hope in all of this mess?”
Discovering hope amid pain, rejection, abandonment, betrayal, and loss can indeed be an immense challenge. Yet, what if I were to propose that it’s not merely about finding hope, especially amidst those layers of anguish and disillusionment, but rather about creating hope?
When you embark on the journey of creating hope for yourself, you take control of your destiny, placing yourself firmly in the driver’s seat. You refuse to leave it to chance or surrender your power by allowing others to define or refine it for you.
Here are three steps I recommend for creating and cultivating your HOPE:
- Identify What Hope Means to You: Take the time to define hope for yourself and provide concrete examples. What does hope look like? What does it feel like?
- Visualize Yourself Driving Towards Hope: Envision yourself in the driver’s seat, cruising along the road of hope. What do you see? What sensations do you experience? What surrounds you?
- Release Unproductive Baggage: Let go of anything that hinders your journey towards hope – whether it’s people, places, or things that hold you back. You deserve to travel light, free from any burdensome passengers.
Hope grants you permission to dream, to aspire, to set goals, and to chase after your desires. It’s understanding that your past does not dictate your present, and your present offers you the opportunity to rewrite your narrative of hope, steering it towards a brighter future.
